Broadfoot banned for 10 games

An independent panel upheld a Football Association charge of aggravated misconduct arising from Rotherham’s Championship defeat to Wigan on March 14.

The ban exceeds the eight-match suspension handed down to Luis Suarez for racially abusing Patrice Evra in 2011 and is believed to be the longest in English football for a verbal offence.

An FA statement read: “Kirk Broadfoot will serve an immediate 10-match suspension after a misconduct charge against him was found proven.

“The charge was that during a league fixture between Rotherham and Wigan Athletic on March 14, 2015, Broadfoot used abusive and/or insulting words towards a member of the opposition, in breach of FA Rule E3(1).

“It was further alleged that the breach was an “Aggravated Breach” as defined by Rule E3(2).

“Broadfoot was also fined £7,500 and ordered to complete an education programme.”

Former Rangers player Broadfoot clashed with Republic of Ireland international McClean during the game after the winger won a free-kick from which Wigan scored. Speaking afterwards, Broadfoot accused McClean of “cheating”.
