Cantona to sue New York Cosmos

Frenchman Cantona, 48, won four Premier League titles in five years with United in the 1990s, and was employed by the reborn Cosmos in 2011 to be the team’s director of football.

Cosmos were prevented from returning to Major League Soccer by New York City FC registering to become the Big Apple’s second MLS franchise first and must ply their trade in the second-tier North American Soccer League until 2020 at least.

Cantona was axed by the Cosmos following a fight with a photographer in London last year and he alleges the club never paid him the $961,290 (£615,000) in salary he was owed.

The club did not immediately comment on the lawsuit, filed in Manhattan Federal Court on May 19.
