Carragher slams Liverpool ‘mole’ over Van Dijk affair

Jamie Carragher has blasted the Liverpool ‘mole’ who leaked the news of the club’s pursuit of Virgil van Dijk.

Southampton made an official complaint to the Premier League over an alleged illegal approach from Liverpool for the Dutch defender.

Saints had not received any formal contact from Liverpool regarding their defender, yet Van Dijk apparently indicated his desire to make the move to Anfield.

Jurgen Klopp is believed to have made Van Dijk his top target, with the chance to work with the Liverpool boss reported to have played a significant role in the player’s decision – information that infuriated Saints so much that they made a complaint to which Liverpool responded by ending their interest in the player.

“Liverpool Football Club would like to put on record our regret over recent media speculation regarding Southampton Football Club and player transfers between the two clubs,” the statement on Liverpool’s official website read tonight.

“We apologise to the owner, board of directors and fans of Southampton for any misunderstanding regarding Virgil van Dijk.”

Former Liverpool man Carragher though believes the only person who should be apologising at the club is the person who leaked the club’s interest.

“FFS! Only person at Liverpool who should apologise is the person who fed the story he wanted to come to LFC when no fee had been agreed (sic),” tweeted Carragher.

Before firmly laying the blame with the club’s ‘mole’.

“I’m blaming the person at LFC who fed it to the local press!”

Carragher also claimed that “all clubs” speak to players and agents before approaching their clubs formally.
