Vernon Anita: Tries to keep tabs on Dimitri Payet

Former Newcastle manager John Carver has claimed current boss Steve McClaren does not know his players well enough to get the best out of them.

Newcastle were easily beaten 2-0 by West Ham at Upton Park on Monday night – a result which leaves the Magpies bottom of the table with just two points from five games.

Despite having 61 per cent possession at the Boleyn Ground they could not create the chances their possession deserved and they were caught out too easily by the Hammers’ counter-attacks.

Carver, who was temporary head coach at St James’ Park from January until June this year, believes former England coach McClaren made a big mistake in handing Vernon Anita a man-marking job on West Ham playmaker Dimitri Payet. France international Payet scored both goals and was voted man of the match with Anita being replaced after 61 minutes.

Carver, who won three of his 20 games on Tyneside, told beIN Sports: “Steve McClaren doesn’t know the players well yet. I was surprised he gave Anita a man-marking role.”

Alan Shearer, who took charge of Newcastle for the last eight games of the season in 2009 and saw the club relegated, claimed Newcastle would have been better to play with 10 men rather than start Papiss Cisse

“I looked at (Papiss) Cisse and thought Newcastle would’ve been better with 10 men. And it’s not just Cisse. (Florian) Thauvin showed nothing. There was not enough hunger from Newcastle to win. West Ham had more drive and pace. At no point did I ever think they’d (Newcastle) win,” Shearer added on beIn Sports.
