The Blues followed up successes over Inter Milan and AC Milan with a confident performance against the Mexicans on Sunday night, which produced two goals in as many second-half minutes for Franco Di Santo and Florent Malouda.
Carlo Ancelotti’s side had plenty of chances to take the lead in the first half but luck was not on their side. Salomon Kalou saw a header tipped onto the post, while Ricardo Carvalho’s header also hit the woodwork.
Club America hit the post themselves on 62 minutes but Chelsea went in front a quarter of an hour from time when Di Santo poked home Malouda’s chip.
Then Di Santo turned provider for Malouda, racing into the box and pulling the ball back for the Frenchman to score.
