Chelsea defender Kurt Zouma admits he cannot get his bearings at right-back and says central defence is his “favoured role”.
The 21-year-old centre-back arrived at Stamford Bridge for £12million in January 2014 and has made 12 appearances for Chelsea this season, but Jose Mourinho has been playing him at right-back in recent matches.
“The manager played me at right-back against Dynamo Kiev and it was the first time in ages I have played in that role. I didn’t get my bearings,” said Zouma.
“My favoured role is in central defence.”
Zouma, who put in a competent display against Kiev, retained the right-back position in Saturday’s 2-1 defeat to West Ham, but considering his excellent performance at centre-half as Chelsea beat Arsenal 2-0 recently it seems a bizarre move from embattled boss Mourinho.
“We have relaxed too much mentally,” Zouma told The Sun. “Our feet got too close to the fire.
“I don’t know why we have not been able to achieve good things this season with the great players we have in our squad. But we are starting to wake up.
“We are all motivated – not to make a spectacular comeback but simply to return to our normal levels.”
