Chelsea look set to switch their striker search elsewhere and have already started sounding out other options with Romelu Lukaku closing in on a move to Man Utd.
Lukaku was believed to favour a return to Chelsea, but such is the influence of agent Mino Raiola, the Everton man is now bound for Old Trafford on a four-year deal after the clubs reportedly agreed a fee of £75million.
The 24-year-old striker will earn a reported £200,000 a week, according to the Daily Mirror, if he signs and Jose Mourinho wants the deal done before United leave for their pre-season tour of the United States on Sunday.
Raiola, who already brokered Paul Pogba, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s moves to United last summer looks set to earn another huge windfall as his part in the deal to take Lukaku to United.
The super-agent reportedly earned £41million from Pogba’s world-record £89million move from Juventus last summer and he will hit the jackpot again this summer, as long as Lukaku does not pull the plug on the deal.
The Telegraph reports that “Chelsea’s only faint hope of resurrecting their own bid for Lukaku rests on whether or not the player is willing to veto his move to United in favour of holding out for his old employers”.
A decision which seems unlikely and Chelsea will now have to look at alternative targets with the reports suggesting “the most obvious move for Chelsea to make would be to renew their interest in Alvaro Morata”.
United pulled out of a move for the Real Madrid man after failing to agree a fee with Real Madrid for the striker. Morata is understood to have been ready to sign for United, but Real have played hard ball over his transfer fee.
And the Spanish giants will not lower their €90million asking price for Morata, even though that valuation has seen one proposed deal collapse, reports AS.
Chelsea tried to land MOrata last summer when Antion Conte had just arrived at the club. Conte had worked with Morata at Juventus and wanted the 24-year=old to follow him to Chelsea but Real put their foot down and insisted he returned to the Bernabeu via a buy-back clause.
Morata is understood to be Conte’s preferred option to Lukaku, although The Telegraph claims Alexis Sanchez, Andrea Belotti and even Christian Benteke could be targeted.
