Comolli questions Liverpool transfers

Comolli, whose association with the club ran from November 2010 to April 2012, remains a much-criticised figure at Anfield due to his own profligate transfer record under the tutelage of Kenny Dalglish.

During his reign in charge of transfers at Liverpool, Comolli oversaw the signings of Andy Carroll, Charlie Adam, Stewart Downing, Doni, Jose Enrique, Sebastian Coates and Craig Bellamy among others, with the likes of Luis Suarez and current captain Jordan Henderson representing his few successes.

But Comolli has now voiced his concerns over the club’s transfer activity in the current window, with James Milner, Danny Ings, Adam Bodgan, Roberto Firmino, Joe Gomez, Nathaniel Clyne and Christian Benteke joining for a cumulative £77.5million.

After signing eight players for over £100million last season, Comolli feels such upheaval within the squad could be extremely detrimental.

“Without talking about individual players, it is always a big risk to make so many changes during one transfer window,” Comolli, who oversaw the transfers of 26 players over two seasons at the club, told talkSPORT.

“I thought it was a huge risk last year after selling [Luis] Suarez and bringing in, I think, nine. Now they have decided to change a lot again and totally rebuild. That is always a massive, massive risk.

“They have bought in players who have got talent, but they are going to compete against some very settled teams.”

Comolli pointed to the transfer dealings of last season’s Premier League top four, saying their “very subtle adjustments” stand them in good stead in the face of opposition from the likes of Liverpool.

“Arsenal, Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea are making some very subtle adjustments to their squad and, on the other hand, Liverpool are changing everything every year. I’m not convinced it is the right approach.

“It is too much in two off-seasons. When you gamble as much money as they did last summer, you have got to give players a chance, and changing everything again sends the message to the players brought in last summer that they will not get a chance.

“By the time everyone settles into the team, and the players coming from abroad get used to the Premier League, they might be well behind fourth place.

“It is a huge risk. If you look at the stability of City, Chelsea, Arsenal throughout the years – the proof is in the pudding.”
