Chelsea new boy Alvaro Morata needs to improve his fitness quickly, according to Antonio Conte.
The £58million recruit made his Blues debut in Saturday’s Champions Cup defeat to Inter Milan in Singapore and failed to make a significant impact.
Morata, who was married last month, was clearly short of match fitness and was deployed on the left side of a front three with Michy Batshuayi the central striker.
It was a performance which left Conte with plenty to think about with the season less than two weeks away.
Conte said: “Morata is just starting to train with us. He has to improve his condition a lot to adapt quickly into our team.
“He is working well but it has been only five days. Today he tried to do his best but for sure he has to improve.”
Morata may get a run out in Sunday’s Community Shield date with Arsenal but he is unlikely to start the Premier League opener with Burnley at Stamford Bridge a week on Saturday.
Stevan Jovetic and Ivan Perisic were on target for Inter in Chelsea’s 2-1 defeat before Geoffrey Kondogbia’s own goal.
“I think that we played against two strong teams, Bayern and Inter, in a period that is an important period where we are working very hard.
“To play three games with the same players, they are tired, very tired, because we played three games with the same players.
“We know it will be difficult in the new season. Two years ago the team ended the league in 10th place and we want to try to avoid this,” added Conte.
