Liverpool star Emre Can could step into the fold for Germany in Thursday’s Euro 2016 semi-final against France.
Sami Khedira has been ruled out of the game and with Bastian Schweinsteiger also struggling to make the last-four showdown, Can looks like the man to step into the breach.
Juventus’ Khedira has been an ever-present for Joachim Low at the tournament, but he picked up a groin problem after just 16 minutes of the quarter-final clash with Italy and was replaced by Schweinsteiger.
The Manchester United man would be the automatic replacement for Khedira, but he is struggling to be fit for the clash in Marseille after picking up a knee-ligament problem.

Speaking about his team selections, Low said: “We’ll have to find solutions. Sami Khedira won’t play for us on Thursday. We will do everything for him to be available for a potential final.
“We will not put our head in the sand. We will try everything with the players that are doubtful. One thing is clear: I will definitely not let play anyone who is not 100% fit. I hope and wish that Bastian can make it.”
Germany are already without the suspended Mats Hummels and injured striker Mario Gomez, who will miss the rest of the tournament after also being injured against Italy.
Low said he had enough options in midfield, naming Can as one of Khedira’s possible replacements because of his versatility.
“He is a player who can be used in a lot of different positions. In training, he has been very convincing. Physically he is very strong and skilled. I think that a player like Can would do our game a lot of good.
“I made the mistake many years ago [of fielding a player who was unfit] and I won’t make it again,” he added, refusing to name the match he was referring to. “The thoughts we have should not go back to the past but go forward. I fully trust all my players. They are training at a high level, they are physically in very good shape.”
Borussia Dortmund man Julian Weigl is also another option if Schweinsteiger doesn’t make it.
