Thibuat Courtois has pulled no punches in his assessment of Chelsea’s season but is now dreaming of European Championship success with Belgium.
Chelsea went into the 2015-16 season as Premier League champions, but a disastrous start to the season quickly ended any hopes of a successful defence and eventually led to the sacking of Jose Mourinho in December.
Courtois said: “We’ve clearly not had a good season. When you are way down the table after two or three months you should not be blind to the fact.
“You know it will not be possible to play a role in the title race. But we still had the FA Cup and Champions League.
“Yet we came up against Everton in the cup and they played better than us. Then we met Paris Saint-Germain in Europe and didn’t play to our normal standard.”
Courtois is now looking forward to the Euro 2016 finals with Belgium, who open their campaign against the Republic of Ireland on June 18.
Courtois added: “We’re dreaming of reaching the final.
“We are more outsiders than favourites, but you need experience, which is something our squad has.”
