Jonathan de Guzman has shunned a return to former club Swansea City by joining Serie A strugglers Carpi on loan from Napoli.
The Dutchman enjoyed a successful two-years at the Liberty Stadium between 2012 and 2014 before heading to Naples, though has found first team football tough to come by this season.
Earlier this month, Swans then-caretaker boss Alan Curtis confirmed that De Guzman was a player he was “sure” the club were interested in bring back to the club, although transfer targets may have been revised following the subsequent appointment of Francesco Guidolin as head coach.
Fellow Premier League sides Bournemouth and Sunderland were also credited with an interest last summer, and his agent claimed that a return to English football was De Guzman’s preferred option this month.
However, with the clock ticking down towards the transfer deadline, De Guzman has opted to stay in Italy before reassessing his options at the end of the season.
