Jermain Defoe: Two goals

Jermain Defoe says he will “guarantee goals” after completing a move to Bournemouth on a three-year deal.

The 34-year-old left Sunderland following their relegation from the Premier League last season.

And the England striker returns to Bournemouth, where he had a successful loan spell early in his career.

Earlier this month, while on England duty, Defoe said the move to the south coast was happening.

He scored 18 times on a season-long loan at Bournemouth from West Ham in 2000-01 and netted in 10 successive matches.

It is understood Defoe will earn around £65,000 a week.

Former West Ham, Tottenham and Portsmouth striker Defoe joined the Black Cats in January 2015 but was unable to halt their slide into the Championship last term despite netting 15 Premier League goals.

The striker’s signing could be the first deal of the week, with the likelihood of Chelsea defender Nathan Ake following in a £20million deal.

However, the Cherries are not interested in signing John Terry, who will be a free agent on Saturday, when the summer transfer window opens.

The Cherries confirmed on Thursday afternoon that the 34-year-old had joined the club from Sunderland on a free transfer after a clause in his contract allowing him to do so had been triggered by the Black Cats’ relegation from the Premier League.

Defoe, who scored in a club record 10 consecutive league games for Bournemouth during a loan spell earlier in his career, admitted the decision to sign a three-year contract had been a straightforward one.

He said: “It’s great to be back and I’m really looking forward to this challenge. When the opportunity came about to return to AFC Bournemouth, I just knew it was the right one.

“It was an easy decision, joining a top team with a top manager. It’s a great place to be.

“The Bournemouth fans know that every time I pull the shirt on, I will give 100 per cent, and the one thing I can guarantee is goals.”

The Cherries, who finished in ninth place last season, have invested heavily in Defoe’s wage packet as they look to increase their goal-tally, and manager Eddie Howe – a former team-mate – was delighted to have got his man.

Howe said: “This is a huge moment for the football club and another step in the right direction.

“We want to bring players here who can have a big impact on our continued rise and we believe Jermain fits that as a natural, proven goalscorer.

Jermain Defoe: Strong interest in January

“We have known him for a long time, since working with him as a young pro and playing with him. I have followed his career and am delighted to say he is going to be playing for AFC Bournemouth again.”

Howe’s men have established themselves in the top flight since winning promotion in 2015 to cap a meteoric rise from the depths of League Two, and chief executive Neill Blake is hoping Defoe’s capture can help them take the next step.

Blake said: “As soon as we found out Jermain was available, we worked hard to make this transfer happen.

“Top-class strikers are not easy to come by, so I am delighted that Jermain will be pulling on the AFC Bournemouth shirt once more.

“He is someone with huge experience at the highest level, he knows the club and we believe he can make a real impact in helping us continue building on our recent success.”

Defoe, who joined Sunderland from Toronto in January 2015, scored 37 goals in 93 appearances for the club.
