Michael Carrick: Unsure what the future holds

Manchester United could be boosted by the return of Michael Carrick, while Derby County could hand their new signing his debut.

Speculation continues to surround the future of United manager Louis van Gaal and a defeat at the iPro Stadium would heap even further pressure on the Dutchman.

Derby County team news

Paul Clement could hand a debut to new signing Marcus Olsson after the Sweden international was cleared to play.

There were some doubts whether the left-back’s transfer from Blackburn Rovers had been completed in time but it has been confirmed Olsson is available for the fourth round clash.

Long-term absentees Will Hughes, Max Lowe and Craig Forsyth remain sidelined, but Clement has no new injury problems.

Manchester United team news

Louis van Gaal has a selection headache regarding who starts at full-back for the Red Devils after Matteo Darmian was ruled out after picking up an injury in the defeat against Southampton.

United are now without five senior full-backs, meaning youngsters Guillermo Varela and Cameron Borthwick-Jackson could start.

Bastian Schweinsteiger, Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo, Luke Shaw, Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young will also miss out, although midfielder Michael Carrick could return after missing the last four matches with a knee injury.

However, Van Gaal admits the England international is not fit enough to complete 90 minutes.
