Diego Costa sent off after scoring on La Liga return

Diego Costa scored Atletico Madrid’s second goal in their 2-0 victory over Getafe and was immediately sent off for celebrating with fans.

Costa, making his first LaLiga appearance since returning to the club, rifled home Sime Vrsaljko’s 69th-minute cross with a brilliant right-footed finish and, having hurdled the advertising hoardings, he dashed up some steps to the stand where he was engulfed by supporters.

The Spaniard’s team-mates ushered him away, but the referee had already seen enough and showed him a second yellow card.

The win cemented second place in the LaLiga table for Atletico, who had opened the scoring through Angel Correa.

Valencia had to come from behind to keep up the pressure on Atletico as they emerged 2-1 winners over Girona.

Portu nodded home Johan Mojica’s cross in the ninth minute, but things went wrong for the mid-table side when Jonas Ramalho turned the ball into his own net before Daniel Parejo’s penalty snatched the spoils.

Sevilla’s quest for European football suffered a setback with a 5-3 defeat by lowly Real Betis.

The match was tied at 2-2 when Riza Durmisi and Sergio Leon scored in quick succession to take match beyond the hosts’ reach, although Clement Lenglet’s strike raised hopes of securing a draw until Cristian Tello was on target deep into injury time.

Las Palmas’ hopes of climbing off the foot of the table were dashed by a 2-1 home defeat to Eibar.

The struggling club took the lead through a Jonathan Viera penalty only for strikes by Fabian Orellana and Sergi Enrich to snatch the result.
