Papy Djilobodji: Defender has left on loan

Chelsea defender Papy Djilobodji has joined Werder Bremen on loan until the end of the season.

The 27-year-old, who was signed by Jose Mourinho on transfer deadline day in September, has played just one minute of first-team football.

The central defender arrived from Nantes, signing a four-year contract, along with fellow defender Michael Hector after the Blues missed out on the signing of Everton’s John Stones.

Djilobodji’s only action was as an injury-time substitute in the 4-1 League Cup win over Walsall in September. He has been an unused substitute twice in the Premier League, most recently for the 0-0 draw at Manchester United last month.

Former boss Mourinho confessed in September he did not scout Djilobodji himself but signed the defender on the back of a recommendation from a scout.

“It was not my choice. It was the choice of somebody I trust completely,” said Mourinho.

He becomes the 32nd Chelsea player to have been on loan at some stage this season.
