Barcelona: Offer help to Chapecoense for rebuilding

Pope is out of contract at his hometown club and Dickov, who has held talks with the 29-year-old striker, faces competition from several other teams for his signature.

“Tom’s someone we’re interested in,” Dickov told the Doncaster Free Press. “That it leaked out from the Port Vale end is disappointing but he’s a player we like.

“He’s scored 61 goals in the last three seasons and he fits the bill in terms of mentality.

“Since Chris Brown left we’ve missed having a targetman up there and Tom’s the sort of player who gets on the end of things in the box.

“I’ve had a positive conversation with Tom and his representative on the phone but there is a lot of interest from other clubs because of the type of player he is and the number of goals he’s scored.”

Dickov, meanwhile, has denied any interest in O’Connor. Doncaster were rather oddly name-checked by Vale chairman Norman Smurthwaite this week in relation to the out-of-contract midfielder.

Smurthwaite suggested that Vale would struggle to hold on to O’Connor, who lives in Lincoln, if Rovers and Dickov came calling for him.

The Scot said: “There’s no truth in that one whatsoever.

“Michael’s a good player. He spent time with us in pre-season last year because he is local but I find it wrong that the Port Vale chairman’s come out and mentioned myself personally and Doncaster Rovers being after Michael when it’s simply not true.

“I think some people should keep their mouth shut sometimes.”
