Downing interest continues to increase

Downing has been widely tipped to leave Upton Park this summer and is said to be keen on a move back to the North East, but there is little agreement over which club the 30-year-old is set to join.

The Newcastle Chronicle reported on Monday morning that Sunderland remain favourites to sign him ahead of Middlesbrough despite both Newcastle and Leicester entering the running.

The Northern Echo, meanwhile, claims Boro are in ‘pole position’ to re-sign Downing and could even complete a deal this week after Sunderland failed to reach an agreement with West Ham.

Any club yet could face further competition from Stoke, who have enquired about his likely wage demands as they consider potential alternatives to Yehven Konoplyanka and Victor Moses, according to The Sentinel.
