The 37-year-old former York, Preston, Leeds, Stoke and Sheffield United striker was promoted to first-team coach by manager Russ Wilcox in March.
He will continue to work primarily with the club’s strikers while also playing a key role in player recruitment.
Wilcox told the club’s official website: “I’m delighted to retain Richard as part of my backroom team and he is going to play a big role for us this season.
“I want Richard to put all of his experience into the strikers at the club and the offensive side of our game because it is important that we score more goals.
“On the other side of his role, the part he will play in terms of recruitment is vitally important just as it is for the rest of the staff to keep our eyes peeled for new players.”
The club recently appointed Andy Leaning and John Schofield as goalkeeping coach and assistant manager respectively.
