Everton boss Sam Allardyce has reportedly set his sights on signing a Ligue 1 ace this January, despite suffering a setback.

According to The Sun, the Toffees are keen on signing £18m-rated defender Adama Soumaoro, and Steve Walsh went for a final check last week, only to find out he was injured.

Soumaoro, who can play either centre-back or full-back, is keen on a switch to the Premier League according to the report.

The Sun also claims that Lille are ready to sell the 25-year-old due to financial problems, despite the fact they are embroiled in a relegation dogfight.

Allardyce is apparently keen on breaking up the ageing defensive duo of Phil Jagielka, 35, and Ashley Williams, 33.

If Soumaoro arrives at Goodison Park, it is anticipated that Williams could be offloaded to make room.

The Blues have already spent £47million this month, bringing in Besiktas star Cenk Tosun for £27m and the remaining £20m going on Arsenal forward Theo Walcott.
