Everton failed in an audacious bid to re-sign Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney in January, according to a report in the Daily Mirror.
Rooney, now 31, left Goodison Park as a teenager back in 2004 in a bumper £27million deal, and has since gone on to become the record goalscorers for both Man Utd and England, and the Toffees were keen on a romantic return to his boyhood club.
However, United reportedly spurned those advances and it remains to be seen as to whether or not Everton boss Ronald Koeman will resurrect the interest this summer.
With Rooney’s powers now on the wane, he has found himself slipping further from prominence at Old Trafford, prompting strong interest from Chinese Super League clubs to take him away from English football.
The player, though, has rejected the lure of China and on Thursday issued a statement committing himself to Man Utd at least until the end of the season.
