A Barnsley fan had to be rescued from Oakwell by firefighters on Saturday after falling asleep drunk on the toilet and not waking up until more than five hours after the final whistle.
The fan, in his early 20s, is said to have woken up at around 10.30pm, telling emergency services that he had a “few beers” and could only remember waking up nearly seven hours after going to the toilet at half-time of Barnslet’s 1-0 defeat to Fleetwood Town.
When the fire crew arrived, he was standing on the top of a portakabin inside Oakwell stadium calling for help. Alarms were set off after he left the toilet and walked into the pitch-black concourse, altering emergency services, before making his way into the stadium to climb onto the structure.
A Barnsley Fire Station spokesperson told The Star: “We got the call through to attend Oakwell and usually its just a false alarm.
“But we turned up and saw this young lad on top of the portakabin trying to get our attention.
“We had to get the ladder to get him down. He had no shoes on and had lost his mobile phone and his hat.
“He was more bothered about his hat though, he seemed a smartly dressed lad.”
The spokesperson added: “I know Barnsley lost again but it can’t be that bad, he must have had a big session for him to fall asleep for that period of time.
“It’s slightly embarrassing for the lad but it’s a lesson for him I’m sure, he’ll not be quick to forgot it.”
