Geraint guides U’s to new highs

The 2000’s have been very kind to Colchester.

At the beginning of the decade we were consolidating in League One. Since then we have gone through promotion, thus finishing in our highest position in the league ever, then relegation. We have had five managers moved to our shiny new stadium and had a few good cup runs the most memorable being Chelsea away in 2005/2006.

The highlight for me though is our first ever season in the Championship, having spent most of our history in the lower divisions it was great to be up there.

The pre season didn’t go well at the start with Phil Parkinson walking out to go to Hull but luckily hiring caretaker manager Geraint Williams steadied the ship

We finished 10th in the league, our home form at Layer Road the reason we did so well. Obviously winning is great to see but it was the football we played that was great, some people said we bullied teams but half of our team weren’t giants i.e; Cureton and Izzet.

The team will probably go down as one of Colchester ‘s best with Gerken and Davidson in goal, then probably one of the most solid defences I have seen with Halford, Brown, Chilvers and Barker with Duguid becoming right back after Halford left in January.

We had Izzet sitting and tackling with Watson orchestrating and Garcia, Mcleod supplying the crosses. Then we have the front two little (Cureton) and large (Iwelumo) probably the best front pairing I have seen at Colchester .

The matches that stand out are the home win against Ipswich (We hadn’t played them for a while) with a well taken Duguid goal, the demolition of Hull at home, away from home the Cureton hat trick at Southend stands out and the kamikaze game at Southampton that we won 2-1.

So hopefully I’ll have memories like these in 10 years time.
