Sir Alex Ferguson says he came close to signing Mario Balotelli for Manchester United in 2010 before being warned against the deal.
Then at Inter Milan, Balotelli was emerging as one of the brightest talents in the game as a 20-year-old striker.
Sir Alex Ferguson says that he “briefly flirted” with signing Balotelli at that stage, but after being warned against any potential deal by some Italian contacts, he opted against it. Balotelli joined bitter rivals Manchester City that same summer, before troubled spells at AC Milan and Liverpool.
“In 2010 I briefly flirted with the idea of signing Mario Balotelli, the talented but controversial Italian striker,” Ferguson wrote in his new book, ‘Leading’.
“I did my homework on him, speaking to a few Italian contacts, but the feedback I got confirmed it was too big a risk.
“I don’t know whether this sort of candid professional courtesy exists in other fields, but for me it was a Godsend.”
