The 20-year-old made his third appearance for the Dons in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Cheltenham, and joins fellow youngsters Will Nightingale, Ryan Sweeney, Ben Harrison, George Oakley, Joe McDonnell and Tom Beere in signing up for next season.

Speaking of Fitzgerald, who joined from QPR last summer, manager Neal Ardley told the club’s official website: “David has signed a new deal and he is another one of our young players to commit for next season. It is hard sometimes for lads when it does not work out for them at one club and they get picked up by another.

“They need to understand what is required at a new club and we have spent all season getting David to that point. He has taken it all on board and that is great. David is certainly a talent.

“We are delighted with all our young players. If I am thinking big for next season and aiming for promotion we need to try and raise the bar with the signings we make, but we also need to raise the bar with the quality we have underneath.

“We have to make the young players here even better.”
