Watford boss Quique Sanchez Flores praised “important” goalkeeper Huerlho Gomez after he saved two penalties to secure a 1-0 win against West Brom at the The Hawthorns.
The Hornets took the lead in the first half through midfielder Ben Watson, but it was goalkeeper Gomez who stole the headlines by pulling off two penalty saves in quick succession to deny Baggies striker Saido Berahino on both occasions.
Flores’ side held on to claim all three points and now sit comfortably in 12th in the Premier League with 41 points – and are all but safe in their first season back in the top flight.
Speaking after the match, the Spaniard praised the impact of the “important” Gomez after his spot-kick heroics.
Flores said: “We are happy we didn’t concede a lot of chances, just the two penalties, and when he had to Heurelho made the saves. He is important for us.
“I think a clean sheet is always important for the team. I’m not sure exactly how we conceded two penalties but he (Gomes) had to save them, this is normal.
“We are really happy for the performance of Heurelho because he is one of the main players for us this season.”
