Former Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen has revealed that a high release clause was the reason his move from Barcelona to Everton collapsed.
Vermaelen has never been a regular at Barcelona, and has been searching for a way out of the club for at least the last 12 months.
Everton were one club interested in signing him in the summer, but Vermaelen told DH that Barcelona blocked the move.
“The board told me they needed four centre-backs,” Vermaelen said.
“I didn’t have a choice but to stay. Clubs tried until the very last day, like Everton, but it was impossible.
“I wasn’t even able to negotiate with any clubs.
“Unfortunately, my release clause is very expensive (€80m). Who was going to pay that?”
