Former ITV anchor says Martin Tyler ‘has had his day’
Former ITV sports anchor Elton Welsby believes Martin Tyler “has had his day” after he was heavily mocked on social media on Monday night.
Tyler, who has been in the football commentary business for over 40 years, remains Sky Sports’ number one commentator and he called the action at Anfield last night in Liverpool’s goalless draw with Manchester United.
And the 71-year-old was criticised after he bizarrely claimed that 30-year-old Liverpool full-back James Milner “is old enough to be Marcus Rashford’s dad.”
Strange when you consider United forward Rashford is 18 years old and that prompted former ITV commentator Welsby, who is six years younger than Tyler, to suggest that Tyler’s days were numbered.
“Like me Martin Tyler has had his day. Overloaded with meaningless stats..nd whittering on nd on nd on. Cant capture th occasions (sic).,” said the 65-year-old, who anchored the ‘Big Match’ and Arsenal’s famous title-winning game at Anfield in 1989.

Welsby was last seen on our screens in May 2000 presenting a regional sports programme for Granada Television.
Paddy Power, somewhat predicatably got in on the act, and suggested Tyler was biased by claiming Tyler would be wearing “the usual Anthony Martial mask”.
Now over to Martin Tyler, who will be calling this game while wearing a red morph suit, and the usual Anthony Martial mask.
