Friedel: MLS reunion exciting

Mauricio Pochettino ‘s side are set to take part in the 20th edition of the fixture, which has previously seen the likes of Chelsea, Manchester United, Bayern Munich and AS Roma take on a team comprising the best players from the American League.

The Spurs goalkeeper has played alongside some of the names expected to make the team for this summer’s clash in Denver including the likes of LA Galaxy star Robbie Keane and Seattle Sounders’ Clint Dempsey.

And Friedel is hopeful that Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard could also feature on July 29 at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park after their moves to New York City FC and LA Galaxy respectively.

He said: “It would be fantastic. Definitely Robbie Keane and Clint Dempsey will make the All-Star team and it will be interesting to see how many games Frank Lampard will have under his belt, how many games Steven Gerrard will have under his belt because it would be great to see those two as well.

“Playing at altitude, the Tottenham boys are going to be breathing a little bit. Denver is a fantastic city, picturesque with the Rocky Mountains in the distance.”

And while Friedel thinks the arrivals of Lampard and Gerrard is a sign of the league’s growing stature and ability to attract top players, he knows big European clubs will always keep a keen eye on emerging MLS stars.

He said: “I think MLS is going to grow at a rapid rate and I think each season you are going to see big name players coming into the league.

“Of course there is going to be the time when a player plays really well and the big European clubs are going to have a look, that’s just natural, but it is very good to see that happen less and less in US terms.

“I’m sure if Mauricio sees someone who performs very well who he has his eye on, maybe he’ll have a look, you never know.”
