Gary Neville outlines Oxlade-Chamberlain’s major flaw

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will not strengthen Liverpool’s first XI, but can fit into Jurgen Klopp’s style, according to Gary Neville.

Neville believes the 24-year-old has several areas of his game to improve, with the biggest being his concentration, after completing a £35milllion move from Arsenal to Liverpool yesterday.

Oxlade-Chamberlain’s deal could reach £40million with add-ons, but Neville says he will not be a first-team regular in his favoured midfield position.

The player reportedly turned down more lucrative offers to stay and to move to Chelsea, instead opting for Anfield where he has presumably been told he will get a chance in central midfield.

When asked where Oxlade-Chamberlain would fit in at Liverpool, Neville told Sky Sports: “He doesn’t get in the best XI. Coutinho, Can, Henderson, Lallana, Salah, Mane, Firmino all play in front of him.

“He doesn’t strengthen the team but what he does do is strengthen the squad.”

Former Man Utd man Neville did though admit that Oxlade-Chamberlain would fit with Klopp’s high-intensity pressing style.

“He’s a player who, to be fair, could play in Jurgen Klopp’s style,” added Neville.

“He’s got huge talent, he’s a decent lad, but I think he has three or four areas of his game that he has to significantly improve – the biggest being concentration.

“The biggest thing in terms of his impact is his assists and goals.

“I do think for Liverpool he should do well in these first six to 12 months.

“I don’t think he will play every single week, but with the Premier League and Champions League he will be an asset for them.

“I think he still has to prove himself. Liverpool will take him out of his comfort zone.

“It’s not a criticism of Oxlade-Chamberlain, but the players in front of him are better.”
