Saints, who finished bottom of the table in May, will have to overcome the powerhouses of Rangers and Hibernian if they are to escape the Scottish Championship at the first attempt.

However, despite the challenges ahead for the Buddies, the 32-year-old says he would like a trip to Glasgow to face former club Rangers on the opening day of the season, with fixtures due to be announced on Friday.

With regards to St Mirren’s chances in this division, Gow told Sky Sports News HQ: “It’s a hard league, very competitive. A lot of big clubs.

“It’ll be good for the fans. There will be good attendances. Morton will be a local derby for us, so they’ll be good games for the club and the players as well.

“Then there is Rangers, Hibs, Falkirk and Queen of the South who did well last year. It’ll be tough to get promoted.”

As for who he would like to face on the opening day of the campaign, Gow added: “The fans would like to see Morton at the start of the season.

“But, for myself, I’ve always enjoyed playing at Ibrox, so I’d like to play against Rangers.”

Watch Sky Sports News HQ at midday on Friday to discover who plays who on the opening day of the Scottish season.
