The £2million January signing from Burnley has flopped in front of goal since moving to The Valley. But he broke his duck at the 13th attempt after coming on at half-time when he rose highest at the far post to meet Lee Cook’s corner and plant a bullet header into the net for a 69th-minute equaliser which pegged back visiting Saints, in desperate need of points at the other end of the table.

The most relieved man was Addicks keeper Darren Randolph, who somehow dropped a Stern John lob into his own net under pressure from no-one but his own defenders after 10 minutes.

At the other end, Richard Wright pulled off a stunning second-half save to deny Darren Ambrose what would have been a winner.
