Former Newcastle forward Hatem Ben Arfa is believed to be heading for a sensational transfer to Barcelona, according to reports in France.
According to Friday’s L’Equipe, the Newcastle cast-off – who has completely reinvented himself at Nice – will ‘very probably’ join Barcelona this summer as a free agent.
The paper claims the 29-year-old travelled to Barcelona on Sunday to meet club representatives and talk over a switch from Nice, for whom his contract expires at the end of what has been a stellar season for the former Hull loan flop.
Former Barca and Les Bleus star Eric Abidal is understood to have brokered the possible move, while the likes of Liverpool, PSG, Lyon, AC Milan and Borussia Dortmund have also been linked with a player, who has engineered a remarkable career turnaround.
Ben Arfa, who signed for Nice in January 2015 after being released from his Newcastle contract, has spoken of his appreciation for Nice after trusting him, but he is eager to play Champions League football and has set his heart on a move to Catalonia.
The French publication claim a source believes ‘things have advanced well’ and a move will be hammered out by next month.
The player’s form for Nice this season was highlighted by this wonder goal earlier in the season.
