Juventus boss Massimiliano Allegri has impressed most of the managerial candidates considered by Chelsea, according to a report.
Just a day after it was reported by the Daily Express and Daily Star that Chelsea met with representatives of Italy coach Antonio Conte for the second time last week, the Mail on Sunday says it is Allegri that is currently the preferred choice at Stamford Bridge.
Conte, Diego Simeone and France boss Didier Deschamps are the others to have been considered so far, it is said, but Simeone has apparently fallen down the pecking order and has indicated he wants to stay at Atletico Madrid anyway.
Maurico Pochettino would be a contender if Tottenham finish the season well, the Mail adds, though no approach has been made for a manager that is unlikely to be released from his contract at White Hart Lane in any case.
Allegri, meanwhile, has Juventus challenging for a fifth successive Serie A title and has also led them into the Champions League last 16 following last season’s run to the final.
Guud Hiddink will continue to advise Chelsea even after he leaves in the summer.
“We haven’t discussed it but without having a formal bond, you can have a bond with whatever has to be done in a club,” Hiddink said.
“It’s not that I quit with the club in the sense ‘goodbye’ and I turn around and I won’t see you anymore. We will see what can be done.
“That was one of the main reasons I came back. It was not a new situation for me. I don’t see that we have to stop the contact rigidly after the last game.”
