England manager Roy Hodgson should consider calling up Tottenham’s Eric Dier as a midfielder, according to Jamie Redknapp.
Dier filled in at both right-back and centre-back for Tottenham during his first season at White Hart Lane but has this campaign been used by Mauricio Pochettino as a holding midfielder in front of the back four.
He capped an impressive display with the equaliser in Spurs’ 4-1 win over Manchester City on Saturday – and, according to Redknapp, has done enough to play himself into England contention.
“Roy Hodgson was watching at White Hart Lane on Saturday and if he wasn’t already, then Eric Dier will definitely be on the England manager’s radar now,” Redknapp told the Daily Mail.
“He is a really intelligent young footballer. He is quick, passes the ball well and knows his limitations — he is happy to do the dirty work and let others take over.
“He has experience of playing in defence but Mauricio Pochettino has been using him in midfield this season and he has been excellent. It is that versatility that makes him such an exciting prospect.
“Dier thinks like a defender so knows where to position himself on the pitch but now he is proving himself in midfield.
“He had to deal with some top attacking talent against Manchester City but as his pitch map shows, he was everywhere in the middle and he scored a fine goal.
“Hodgson may have looked at him as a defender but now he is forcing himself into contention as a midfielder, because England haven’t got too many like him.”
