Holt fitting right in at Rangers

The former Hearts midfielder told the Rangers website he is confident of becoming a major part in Mark Warburton’s plans for the new season.

Holt completed a three-year deal on Wednesday after a compensation fee was agreed with Hearts and he claims his attacking prowess will match up well with the new manager’s 4-3-3 formation.

He said: “I can fit into any role in the midfield. Coming here one of my aims will be to try and score a fair amount of goals. That will be a target I will set myself but as a team we just want to be successful and then personal goals will come with that.”

The 22-year-old is already off the mark for his new side after scoring in a pre-season friendly against Ayr United while on trial. He also started against Burnley on Tuesday night in a team that featured just four players from last year’s squad.

Despite these wholesale changes, Holt believes the players are starting to gel. He said: “In games I think you can see that the boys are getting it together and they’re putting that onto the park now.

“Training is great, we have the right mix because pre-season for a player is always a challenging time physically but it feels like this is right and I think the boys have done well in the games we have played so far and shown that.”

Rangers’ first competitive game of the new campaign comes this Saturday when they travel to Championship rivals Hibernian in the Petrofac Training Cup.

The former Scotland U21 international grew up in Edinburgh as a Hearts fan and joined the club at just nine-years-old, but he insists he is just focused on his new team ahead of the clash with Hibs.

He said: “We are looking to go there full of positivity and get the win. Any personal goals after that is a bonus.

“It is one of the cup games and we would like to win and I think if you get in the habit of winning then it is all the better.”
