Southampton captain Jose Fonte has echoed his manager Ronald Koeman in expressing his frustration at the lack of spending at St Mary’s.
Koeman said last week that he was becoming irritated by the Saints’ transfer policy, with the south coast club being the only Premier League side to make a profit on summer business.
Saints have failed to win in their last four matches and dropped into the bottom half of the table after a 1-1 draw with basement club Aston Villa on Saturday.
“Maybe we don’t have the depth that other teams have,” said Fonte. “If you saw the Liverpool bench the other night with Benteke, Firmino – all these guys. That’s like £25m a player, that’s like £100m on the bench.
“Although we have quality, other teams have higher aspects on the bench for solutions to change the game.
“You can’t be too optimistic and think you’re going to win the league because it’s very difficult.
“I want to sign Ronaldo and Messi, but it’s hard for the team to get the right players in January. I’m sure they’ll be looking to add some quality. If you don’t keep up you see very clearly that you start dropping, so we need to keep up.”
