Jose Mourinho thinks Manchester United matched Arsenal despite losing 2-0 against Arsene Wenger’s men in the Premier League on Sunday.
A long-range effort from Granit Xhaka and a header from Danny Welbeck ended the Red Devils’ long unbeaten run in the league and propel the Gunners two points behind United.
“I’m disappointed with the result, not the performance,” said Mourinho. “I liked individual performances and also collective performances.
“We lost because we didn’t score and we had great chances to score before them. They had luck with that goal.
“I can’t ask anymore from my players who haven’t played a minute for several weeks – Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Juan Mata were all amazing.
“The team was good, organised, we tried to win, we played to win, we defended well and Arsenal weren’t better than us in my opinion.”
Mourinho added: “It is all on the Europa League. We tried to play for a result today, you can say I made changes, but you cannot say we didn’t try to win the game. Everything for Thursday now.”
On making eight changes to his starting XI, the Portuguese said: “I feared some players couldn’t play for 90 minutes so I felt I had to make changes.
“We need everybody. We have such a small squad at the moment so it is fantastic for Jones, Smalling and Mata to play minutes.”
