Dejan Lovren: In action for Liverpool against Carlisle on Wednesday

Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren is facing a lengthy period on the sidelines after suffering suspected ankle ligament damage against Carlisle.

Lovren was stretchered off late on in extra time of Wednesday night’s Capital One Cup third-round tie against Carlisle at Anfield, in which Liverpool needed a penalty shootout to progress.

The 26-year-old was given oxygen as he left the field and could now be out of action for more than two months if Liverpool’s initial fears are proven correct by a scan.

Lovren was dropped by Brendan Rodgers for the draw against Norwich in the Premier League last weekend after enduring a mixed start to the new season.
