Town finished second in League Two to make an instant return to League One after relegation last year.
Jackson was in caretaker charge 12 months ago and believes Mellon has turned the club around.
“He has inspired a town,” Jackson said. “He came in with a vision and a plan and he has brought the whole community into it.
“He is a people person, he treats everyone really well and he is someone I have learnt a lot from.
“Credit to him, he brought in a lot of players over the summer but he has gelled everyone together.
“To do all that in under a year is a huge achievement.
“And I believe we are already on the right track for next season.”
