Jorginho: Arsenal warned they could face competition for midfielder

Jorginho’s agent has played down reports the Napoli midfielder has been watched by Arsenal amid reports he could move to the Emirates in January.

The Gunners reportedly sent their chief scout to watch the 23-year-old midfielder in action at the weekend.

Jorginho has been in stunning form for Napoli this season with the club also in solid form, having only tasted defeat on the opening day of the Serie A campaign two and a half months ago.

Arsenal scouts watched Jorginho in Napoli’s goalless draw with Genoa on Sunday, but the player’s agent Joao Santos was not willing to disclose whether he will stay in Italy for the long term.

“I don’t know if the Arsenal scouts were in Genoa for Jorginho,” Santos told Radio Crc. “I’m not surprised that the player is doing very well – especially in light of the change of coach [Maurizio Sarri replacing Rafa Benitez] – and has top clubs interested in him.

“One of the head scouts of Arsenal is well-known, and so I know he was at Marassi for the Napoli match. Right now we’re more thinking about Jorginho at Napoli than the transfer market.

“I’m in Brazil, and when I’m back we can discuss my client’s contract. The priority is getting a call-up for the national team, then there’s the January transfer market.

“If Napoli receive an irrefutable offer for Jorginho in January then it’s normal that we’d make our assessments.”

Reports in the London Evening Standard on Wednesday suggested Tomas Rosicky, Mikel Arteta and Mathieu Flamini would all be allowed to leave the club as free agents when their contracts expire at the end of the season, leaving the Gunners with slots in their midfield to fill.
