A journalist has revealed he was once asked by Real Madrid not to report the fact that Gareth Bale cost more than Cristiano Ronaldo.
Bale joined the Spanish giants from Tottenham in a world-record £85million transfer three years ago, while Real Madrid paid £80million in 2009 to acquire the services of Ronaldo from Manchester United.
And according to Sunday Times football correspondent Jonathan Northcroft, the £5million difference upsets the Portuguese.
“Real Madrid is a club that is so worried about image that when I interview Gareth Bale earlier in the season, it was requested to me: ‘Don’t put in the transfer fee. Don’t put in the article what Gareth Bale cost,'” Northcroft told BBC Radio 5 live.
“The reason for that is because it was a world record transfer fee but Cristiano Ronaldo doesn’t like to see that somebody else cost more than him.
“Don’t put in £85million. Just say it was a lot.”
Northcroft went on to admit he didn’t include the transfer fee in his subsequent article.
