Jurgen Klopp was left staggered by the first question he had to answer in his post-match press conference on Wednesday night.
The Liverpool boss, who had just watched his side take Spartak Moscow apart 7-0, was asked about Spartak forward Quincy Promes’ performance and whether he wass interested in him.
“Wow. I have nothing to say about this,” said Klopp, whose team sailed through to the Champions League knockout stage.
Promes started in attack for Spartak Moscow at Anfield and came very close to scoring with a curling shot in the second half.
Klopp was also asked about the 25-year-old, who has been linked with Liverpool in the past, at yesterday’s press call and he likened the Dutch striker to Mane.
“Promes is like Sadio Mane,” Klopp said ahead of tonight’s game. “He can shoot very quick and is a proper striker.”
Promes is one of Spartak Moscow’s standout players and he is understood to have been a favourite of Klopp’s and on his radar during the last winter transfer window, according to the Liverpool Echo and Sunday Mirror.
The former Twente star has a close relationship with international colleague and Liverpool man, and in January he admitted the Reds man wanted him to move to Anfield.
He said: “Yes, he says he wants me [at Liverpool], because he likes me as a player.
“That’s what he said. I talked with him, of course. But it wasn’t about Liverpool. We’re just friends.”
Spartak general manager Sergei Rodionov also confirmed in January that £25million-rated Promes does have a buyout in his contract, which expires in 2021.
“He has a set transfer sum in his contract. I am not going to say what the amount is,” said Rondionov.
Promes has been impressive this season with 13 goals and eight assists in 23 games.
