Liverpool new boy Sadio Mane has revealed he came close to signing for Jurgen Klopp before his summer transfer to Anfield.
The winger has started six of Liverpool’s seven Premier League games this season and scored three times and he is proving to be an astute signing by Klopp, who paid Southampton £34million for him in the summer.
Klopp has been full of praise for the “width and space” that the Senegal forward gives his side.
Meanwhile, Mane has hailed his Klopp’s influence and revealed the pair very nearly worked together in Germany.
“Before I came here, I had the chance to meet him when he was at Borussia Dortmund,” he told BBC Sport.
“I was at Red Bull Salzburg and he tried to sign me – but it didn’t happen and that is football. He is a good manager and he is someone who likes his players.
“At the end of last season, he called me and told me he wanted me to come to Liverpool.
“I said straightaway that I want to come. It was the right time and right coach for me. I am very happy to be here.”
“He’s a fantastic player,” Coutinho said in September.
“He’s very quick, he’s got very good feet, so that helps us to create a lot of chances to score.
“But it’s not just him but as we saw in the game with Daniel (Sturridge), (Roberto) Firmino and (Adam) Lallana up there too.”
