Arsene Wenger: Wants an experienced defender

Arsenal have taken highly-rated goalkeeper Guy Smit on a two-week trial and the youngster is desperate to make his mark.

The 20-year-old decided not to extend his contract with Dutch side NEC Nijmegen and he has been invited to London Colney to try and impress Arsene Wenger.

A whole host of clubs are believed to be tracking Smit, but The Gunners are in pole position to land the player if he produces the goods in training.

He told newspaper De Gelderlander: “This opportunity I have to seize.”

The move could see any of Matt Macey, Emiliano Martinez, Hugo Keto or Deyan Iliev depart the Emirates Stadium on either a permanent or loan deal, with plenty of stars all vying for a place in the first-team squad.

Smit has already been on trial with Brighton but Chris Houghton’s side have not kept up interest, allowing the Gunners to swoop.

Smit made 11 appearances for NEC last term in the reserve team, keeping three clean sheets.
