Klopp claims Liverpool midfielder is a ‘top three’ England player

Jurgen Klopp says Adam Lallana “is still a top three or four player for England” despite having a tough season for Liverpool.

Lallana was named in Gareth Southgate’s England squad on Thursday, but he has had his struggles with injury this campaign.

The midfielder only made his first appearance of the season in November and was handed his first start in January after being sidelined with a hamstring problem.

His only first-team starts this season have come against Everton in the FA Cup, Burnley in the Premier League and Porto in the Champions League – a win, a win and a draw.

Klopp says that despite his issues, his importance to club and country is undeniable.

“Adam’s injury was a really big injury. It needed time,” he said.

“I spoke to Gareth this week and told him it was a big challenge to have him around and not use him.

“But he needs more recovery time. I said he would be fit next week 100 per cent – he’s welcome to play him (for England).

“Adam has had probably the most difficult season of his career so far but he is still a top three or four player for England. 100%”
