Klopp explains why Liverpool didn’t rival Arsenal for Aubameyang

Jurgen Klopp has lifted the lid on why his Liverpool side decided not to challenge Arsenal for the signature of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

The Gabon striker has been a long-term target of Klopp having worked with the player at Borussia Dortmund, but the former St Etienne hotshot is on the brink of a move to Arsenal.

With a £58million deal for the striker expected to be finalised on Tuesday, Klopp, speaking to DAZN, admitted he would struggle to find a place in his side for the prolific frontman.

“Auba is really a good guy,” said Klopp. “Of course, reading the newspapers, you ask yourself if all these things must happen.

“But in fact things are mostly not that controversial as they are presented. In the end everybody will be happy.

“In the first half of the season he also scored often although last summer he wanted to go to China allegedly.

“He is a great player but he does not play in a position for which we urgently need new players.”

Aubameyang is expected to be handed the No 14 shirt at Arsenal after the striker agreed personal terms worth an estimated £180,000 a week.
