Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has hailed his team’s “brilliant” fightback after they came from a goal down to beat Crystal Palace 2-1 at Selhurst Park despite being down to 10-men.
Liverpool looked to be heading towards yet another defeat against Palace after Joe Ledley put his side 1-0 ahead, and midfielder James Milner was dismissed for a second yellow card after a foul on Wilfried Zaha.
But Roberto Firmino equalised after capitalising on an error from goalkeeper Alex McCarthy, and then a dramatic stoppage-time penalty from Christian Benteke secured a 2-1 win for Klopp’s side.
Speaking after the match, Klopp said he believes it was a thoroughly deserved win and the Reds now climb to seventh in the Premier League.
“I’m pretty happy,” said the German. “It was well deserved. We played well in that second-half against a well-rested team.
“First-half we started okay but forgot to shoot on the goal. But what we did in the end was brilliant.
“I feel sorry for Palace but I have just seen the replay [of the penalty decision] in the dressing room and it was a clear penalty. If there was no contact, Benteke would have been in a great position to shoot.
“If you are behind it’s not so important why and how, the only thing is that the difference is not so big.
“We had to change the system and had to try to stay offensive. We knew it was risky but at the end we forced it and for us it is a great win.”
Klopp was also full of praise for substitute Benteke, who won the penalty in added time after being brought down by Damien Delaney.
“It was a perfect change, he really worked hard,” said Klopp. “His first touch was a big chance and then it was his penalty. He made the move and forced the situation.
“Football is a lot of things and sometimes it’s all about passion. What I saw today from my players, they defended with all they had and that’s good to see.”
Firmino continued his wonderful goalscoring run for Liverpool, claiming his seventh Premier League goal in his last eight appearances.
Speaking about the Brazilian forward, Klopp said: “Sometimes you need a bit of luck. We forced it in a way because we were high in our formation. We were there, cool enough and scored the goal.”
