Southampton manager Ronald Koeman admitted his team “lack confidence” after the Saints’ 1-1 draw against Sunderland at St Mary’s.
Saints skipper Jose Fonte was given a straight red card in the 79th minute and Southampton looked to be heading for defeat when Sunderland’s Jermain Defoe netted in the 85th minute.
But defender Virgil van Dijk swept home in the 93rd minute to earn a point for the home side.
Koeman told BBC Sport: “For 85 minutes, we were not at the level I expect of Southampton. I think we lack confidence at the moment. They made it very difficult with their defensive organisation.
“We played better football with one player less on the pitch. The red card was a one-on-one situation. If it’s a foul, then it’s a red card. You have to accept that.”
