Lee would relish reunion

Much-travelled midfielder Fowler is a free agent after his contract expired at Crawley, who were relegated from League One this season with Saunders in interim charge.

The 31-year-old has also played under Saunders at Doncaster and Wrexham and it has been widely speculated that he is a summer transfer target for the recently-appointed Blues boss.

Fowler makes no secret of his good relationship with his fellow Welshman and would relish the chance to work for him once more.

He told Press Association Sport: “I think it’s an easy link to make because I have played under Dean at a few clubs.

“Given how well I get on with Dean and him being at a club like Chesterfield, who are a club on the up over the last few years, I think I’d be silly not to listen to anything he might have to say – should that situation arise.

“I’ve read in various places that I’ve had an offer but at the minute though, there’s nothing on offer from Chesterfield.

“Working under Dean again is something I would like, however. I have always played my best football under him.

“Sometimes certain managers know how to get the best out of certain players and he certainly knows how to get the best out of me, both on and off the field.

“He is good at man-management and getting players to play for him, he’s brilliant at that. He knows which players need an arm putting round them and which one’s need a rollicking.”

Asked hypothetically about the possibility of playing for Chesterfield, Fowler said: “Of course it would interest me.

“And I think my style of play would suit Chesterfield. I’m a football purist, I suppose. I like getting the ball down and playing, which is what Chesterfield are very good at.

“I’ll go and get the ball off the goalkeeper and start building play from the back. I’m confident in possession and I’ll always want the ball, in tight spaces, when things aren’t going well – I won’t hide.”
